Africa Union Should Involve Repatriating not only Ethiopian, but also All Africa Looted Treasures from the Colonial Period
In its on April the 3rd , The Guardian wrote an interesting article that highlights several things, most critically to me is the sense of impunity and arrogance. The article headline is ‘Looted Ethiopian treasure in U.K Could be return on loan.’ So what it saying…yes precisely the headline says that treasure looted by Britain from Ethiopia will not be return unconditionally, but it will be loaned to Ethiopia.
Most of this treasures is located in different museum in British including in Victoria and Albert Museum and several other museums. The treasures where stolen when British sent an army of 13,000 to fight against Ethiopian Emperor Tewodros II at he battle of Maqdella in April 1868 and Emperor Thewdros was defeated.
They burndown his castel at Meqdela to the ground, the British started to plundered valuables artifacts, manuscripts, jewelry, the golden crown and most deplorably the Emperor his own son, the seven year old child was kidnapped as a part of this plundering orgy.
The expedition needed 200 donkeys 15 elephants to transport these looted treasures, which are today in British institution and museums. In 2007 Ethiopia formally filed for the return of these stolen treasures.
According to some resource the Emperor’s son Alemayehu Tewodros has been asking for his return to his homeland but his request was denied. He died at the age of 18 though racism and neglect.
