The Unintended Consequences of meddling with Ethiopian Politics and Religion, a few lessons from history
Ethiopia has been around for millennia, it even used to have the longest monarchy in the world until 1974. Since then Ethiopia has been Know to the world as posture child for drought, civil war, disease. It was so bad even the Oxford dictionary used Ethiopia as an example for famine…what so sad about Oxford dictionary, it used it because they know most African look up to Ethiopia. If they put down Ethiopia, they now these young and new Independent African Nation doesn’t have a big brother to look upon.
It has been like for decades, but it seems that time is over; World, whether You Like or Not Ethiopia is Rising Once Again. There is nothing you can do to Stop… However, that doesn’t mean they won’t try, they still are. We encourage them to stop it because the outcome will be the same as in the past(A LOSS TO THE MEDDLER). Don’t Forget Ethiopia never lost a war to the outsider, unless Ethiopia was provocative. Here are the few Examples from history
When the Aggression is From Outside
The Ottoman Empire
The Ottoman Empire conquered the Habesh starting in 1557, when Özdemir Pasha took the port city of Massawa and the adjacent city of Arqiqo, even taking Debarwa, then capital of the local ruler Bahr negus Yeshaq. Yeshaq revolted once again with Ottoman support but was defeated once and for all in 1578, Kifle was the king of Massawa, leaving the Ottomans with domain over Massawa, Arqiqo and some of the nearby coastal environs, which were soon transferred to the control of Beja Na’ibs. Not only Ethiopia gets back its territory from the Ottoman Empire, as we all learn from history that was also the beginning of the Decline of the Ottoman Empire.
As we all know Portuguese was the pioneer of discovering the new land and greate expedition throughout the world in the 16th and 17th century. As a result, Portuguesian is the first to be in Ethiopia from Europe. However, these missionaries try to convert Ethiopian from the Christian (Ethiopian Orthodox()) to Other kinds of Christianity(Catholicism). They are so persistent they even had a chance to convert one of Ethiopian King, the father of king Fasildes(Susenyos). The Jesuit missionaries had offended the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo faith of the local Ethiopians so much in June 1632, Fasilides, Susenyos’ son, declared the state religion again to be the Ethiopian Orthodoxy and expelled the Jesuit missionaries and other Europeans. Instead of pursuing the expedition to the west or the east like the British and France did, the Portuguese the persued destroy Ethiopian Orthodox Church. Since then the Portuguese never been a pioneer in anything and, and look at them now they are one of the poorest nations in Europen. Look what happened to Catholicism since then, we have over a million Christian churches in the world (the outcome of Protestantism, which has over 900 followers worldwide) and As we all know Catholic church is rocked by child molestation since the 1990’s.
Remeber Ethiopia Orthodox Thewado church is one of the earliest Christian body in the world, if not the first. The Ethiopian Orthodox believes in one perfectly unified Nature of Christ; i.e., a complete union of the Divine and Human Natures into one nature is self-evident in order to accomplish the divine salvation of humankind, as opposed to the “two Natures of Christ” belief commonly held by the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, Lutheran and most Protestant Churches.
The Egyptian and Sudanese
Although Yoahness IV was the king of Ethiopia, he didn’t have complete control of the country. On the top of the Egyptians, the aggressor wanted to control the port of Misawa. Here once again Ethiopia forced to battle another war at the Battle of Gura. Which was fought on March 7–9, 1876 between the Ethiopian Empire and the Khedivate of Egypt near the town of Gura in Eritrea. It was the decisive battle of the Ethiopian–Egyptian War. The Egyptians invaded from their coastal possessions in what is now Eritrea. The armies of Yohannes and Isma’il met at Gundet on the morning of 16 November 1875. There was a crushing rout of the vastly-outnumbered but well equipped invading Egyptian force at the hands of the defending Ethiopian force. News of this huge defeat was suppressed in Egypt for fear that it would undermine the government of the Khedivate. After the defeat at Gundet, the Egyptians sent another, much larger force, which was armed to the teeth to invade from the north. They built a fort there but were again defeated at the Battle of Gura in March 1876. Ten years later Emperor Yohannes IV, had been forced engaged a war with the dervishes, who had in the meantime become masters of the Egyptian Sudan, and in 1887 a great battle ensued at Gallabat, in which the dervishes, under Zeki Tumal, were beaten. But a stray bullet struck the king, and the Ethiopians decided to retire. The king died during the night, and his body fell into the hands of the enemy (March 9, 1889). Even if Egyptian and their Sudan allied killed the Ethiopian king, both countries became a victim of colonization in the same year during the scramble for Africa by European colonizers, which continues until the 1960’s.
Italy (The Double Whammy)
Using the master plan of 1984 Berlin Conference, in late 1895, Italian forces invaded Ethiopia. However, Menelik completely routed them in early 1896 as they approached the Tigrayan capital, Adwa. This victory brought Ethiopia new prestige as well as general recognition of its sovereign status by the European powers. Besides confirming the annulment of the Treaty of Wuchale, the peace agreement ending the conflict also entailed Italian recognition of Ethiopian independence; in return, Menelik permitted the Italians to retain their colony of Eritrea. But for the Italian, defeated by an armed African force was an insult, which they will never forget untill they redeem themselves over this unprecedented defeat.
So they wait another 40 years to combat this humiliation, and they got what they wanted Benito Mussolini, axis-fascist leader. And he promises the Italian to restore the order of WHITE being the superior human being, invade Ethiopia Once again stay there for five years(all which has been a headache to his government(Ethiopian has been fighting guerrilla warfare for the whole five years occupation)). During this time Italian army used Chemical Gas to exterminate Ethiopians ( all in all over hundreds of thousand Ethiopian has been Massecared. The Italian Government Still not apologize for it. We still waiting… Anyway the Italian lost the war, well you might say, that is imminent because of the outcome of the WWII(all axis powers lost including the Germans, Japan, and of course The Italians). But Ethiopia kicked out the Italians from Ethiopia in 1941. HELLO!!!… The Second World War didn’t fully blow until the beginning of 1942, where the USA join the allied force(December 7, 1941) it was attacked by Japan on Pearl Harbor(Hawaii). The British were scrambling to save their country from the Germans, France completely annexed by the Germans. In short, Ethiopia didn’t need that much help of from any country to win that war it did it by itself.
The USSR(the 80’s and 90’s)
There is not much to say about the Soviet Union, because Ethiopians are Responsible for that(Ethiopians for once forgot who they really ware, and start wanting to act and think like the whites(like that make them a genius or a better human being), which means reducing themselves communist and capitalist ideology, Instead of what it means to be Human, who was the creation of God). We all know the result was devastation, famine, war, and the endless cycle of migration for the Ethiopians. However, that doesn’t mean USSR didn’t pay its share of Grievances(divided over 10 countries), they are still paying for their share of 1970’s, 1980’s attack on Ethiopian Orthodox church.
When Ethiopia is the Aggressor
Although Ethiopia is known for not being an aggressor, it has its own share of flexing its muscle a few times; And the outcome was devasting for Ethiopia. The defeated was handed to her by the British in the 19th Century, and by God when he was taking a side to the Israelites.
The Battle of Magdala
During his reign, King of the King Tewodros II had sent a letter to Queen Victoria requesting munitions and military experts from the British, delivered by an envoy, Captain Cameron, which had gone unanswered. Tewodros II, who was outraged by this lacked up all the Britsih missionaries. And as we all know the out the Britsh Empire Stole Ethiopian treasure, artifact, literature, medicine…all in all over 500 Camele needed to transport all these great treasures, which the Britsh government still believes, it is the right full owner, which is again piteously LAUGHABLE.
Do not mess with the children of God(Israelites)
Since these are from the bible here is the whole passage; 2 Chronicles 14
2 Asa did what was good and right in the eyes of the Lord his God, 3 for he removed the altars of the foreign gods and the high places, and broke down the sacred pillars and cut down the wooden images. 4 He commanded Judah to seek the Lord God of their fathers, and to observe the law and the commandment. 5 He also removed the high places and the incense altars from all the cities of Judah, and the kingdom was quiet under him. 6 And he built fortified cities in Judah, for the land had rest; he had no war in those years, because the Lord had given him rest. 7 Therefore he said to Judah, “Let us build these cities and make walls around them, and towers, gates, and bars, while the land is yet before us, because we have sought the Lord our God; we have sought Him, and He has given us rest on every side.” So they built and prospered. 8 And Asa had an army of three hundred thousand from Judah who carried shields and spears, and from Benjamin two hundred and eighty thousand men who carried shields and drew bows; all these were mighty men of valor.
9 Then Zerah the Ethiopian came out against them with an army of a million men and three hundred chariots, and he came to Mareshah. 10 So Asa went out against him, and they set the troops in battle array in the Valley of Zephathah at Mareshah. 11 And Asa cried out to the Lord his God, and said, “Lord, it is nothing for You to help, whether with many or with those who have no power; help us, O Lord our God, for we rest on You, and in Your name, we go against this multitude. O Lord, You are our God; do not let man prevail against You!”
12 So the Lord struck the Ethiopians before Asa and Judah, and the Ethiopians fled. 13 And Asa and the people who were with him pursued them to Gerar. So the Ethiopians were overthrown, and they could not recover, for they were broken before the Lord and His army. And they carried away very much spoil. 14 Then they defeated all the cities around Gerar, for the fear of the Lord came upon them; and they plundered all the cities, for there was exceedingly much spoil in them. 15 They also attacked the livestock enclosures, and carried off sheep and camels in abundance, and returned to Jerusalem.
We are not saying God doesn’t have a Special place for Ethiopia, in fact to the contrary. Let his own word testify
“Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hands unto God.” Psalms 68:31
“Are you not like the Ethiopian to me, O people of Israel?” Amos 9:7
In conclusion, Powerfull countries and people come and Goes, but One thing remains Constant.
